Afghanistan and Canada: can we hold the line to 2011?

In the wake of the August 20th Afghanistan presidential elections, the “issue-threads” on that country have multiplied and it’s good to see Canada’s leading news organization drill down into details.

But three areas remain under reported:

-the thinking behind the U.S. troop surge and continuing high level military reviews about “the situation.”

-The status of the U.S. anti-war effort.

-Stories and information about Canada’s anti-war movement.

U.S. troop surge: behind the headlines of what NATO commander Gen. Stanley McChrystal is up to – reports suggest today that he may ask for 20,000 more international troops. The Dreyfuss Report provides a two part evaluation of select American “think-tank-thinking” that often sets the frame for how the North American and European media report the war. Everything NATO and Canada does in Afghanistan operates within the world-view of men like McChrystal and US central command head, Gen David Petraeus. Too often major Canadian media give us only the watered down versions of the thinking behind the military strategy.

U.S. anti-war organizations. A recent post at the New York Times gives Canadian readers an at-a-glance review: this fall, protests, teach-ins, and memorials are planned although such efforts are subdued compared to the anti-Iraq war movement. A key reason, of course, liberals ginger about taking on President Obama. A must see for Canadians – and apologies to those readers who are more up to speed on this: Robert Greenwald’s six episode Internet film, “Rethink Afghanistan” – Greenwald interviews academics, Afghans and former CIA operatives to raise questions about issues that Canadians must know about: civilian casualties, women’s rights, the cost of the war, and whether it has made the US safer.

Canada’s anti-war movement: from Vancouver, this site provides a look into “what’s going on” but I welcome links and feedback from across Canada. Is there a grass roots movement, not dominated by the “hard left” in our country? Compared to President Obama, our Prime Minister isn’t nearly as popular. And yet, 2011 – our “A/stan expiry” date – seems to give “mainstream” Canadians a sense of complacency. What am I missing?

Zionists’ academic terrorism

“Why discredit, defame and silence those with opposing viewpoints? I believe it is because the Zionist Lobby knows it cannot win based on facts,” – Dr. Joel Beinin (Jewish professor at Stanford University in his article “Silencing critics not way to Middle East peace”, San Francisco Chronicle, February 4, 2007).

“I grew up as a White girl in the Jim Crow South and I have spent my adult life in the study of racism, what I see when I go to Palestine is Jim Crow on steroids,” – Tema Okun, a Jewish academic in ‘A Jewish state – or Jewish values?’, Mondoweiss, July 12, 2009).

“How tragic that in our own time the very state established by the Jews in the aftermath of this evil has become a place where racialism, religious discrimination, militarism, and injustic prevail; and that Israel itself has become a pariah state whin the world community. Events taking place today are all too reminiscent of the pogroms from which our own forefathers fled two and three generations ago – but this time those in authority are Jews and the victims are Muslim and Christian Palestinians,” – statement from 18 prominent American Jews, The Nation, February 3, 1988.

Many Universities in the US have a long history of sanctioning academic, students, and holding debates – critical to the Zionist entity, Zionism or even Zionist Jews – from professor Norman Finkelstein to professor William I. Robinson (University of California – ADL charging his e-mail criticizing Israeli attacks on Gaza, Dec-Jan 2009 – as ‘anti-Semitism’) to professor Joel Kovel being fired from Bard College (for authoring the book ‘Overcoming Zionism’) to professor Tariq Ramadan (banned from joining Notre Dame University in 2004 and now fired by Dutch University for hosting a religious show at Iranian TV).

Since September 11, 2001 – this Zionazi censorship of ‘freedom of speech’ has beening creeping into neighboring Canada too. The pro-Israeli Jewish groups like Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC), Canada Israel Committee, Jewish Defence League, B’nai Brith, etc. has been going crazy to get Ottawa ban anti-Zionist academics, politician, books and even words (calling Israel an Apartheid state) from telling the truth about Zionist imperialism in the Middle East and their Nazi-style treatment of the native Muslim and Christian Palestinians. Be it professor Norman Finkelstein (a Jew) or David Olesker (a British-born Israeli Jew) or George Galloway (former Mayor of London and a Christian British MP) or Dr. David F. Nobel (a Jew professor at York University, who filed a ‘character assassination’ law suit against Canadian Jewish lobby groups for US$25 million in 2006) or the Jewish professor Michael Neumann (Peterbrough’s Trent University for his “anti-Israel” essays) or professor Yakov M. Rabkin (University of Montreal, who was called ‘a self-hating Jew’ for authoring the book ‘A Threat from Within: A Century of Jewish Opposition to Zionism’). But in contrast to that anti-Muslim racist Jews like Daniel Pipes, Israeli prime minister Bibi, and dozens of Israeli academics have been welcomed at Toronto’s York University, Concordia University, and other Universities across Canada.

Canadian lawyer and writer, Edward C. Corrigan, in his latest article titled Is it anti-Semitic to defend Palestinian human rights?, published in The Canadian Charger (August 26, 2009), wrote:

“All across Canada and in the United States, there is an organized campaign to suppress criticism of Israeli policies toward the Palestinians. The campaign is especially strong on university campuses where many voices have been raised in support of human rights for the Palestinians. One such example is the attempt to suppress the Public Interest Research Group, founded by Ralph Nader, at the University of Ottawa for their support for Palestinian human rights.

Similar anti-Palestinian campaigns have occurred at many universities in Canada including the University of Toronto, the University of Western Ontario and York University.

An attack against a student group that was sympathetic to the Palestinians occurred at the University of Western Ontario in 1982. The student group was refused official recognition because of its support for the Palestinians and for sponsoring Palestinian and Arab speakers. After this refusal a complaint was made to the Ontario Human Rights Commission.

After a long battle, and with the support of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and its General Counsel Alan Borovoy, and a supportive editorial in The Globe & Mail, the Ontario Human Rights Commission compelled the University Students Council at the University of Western Ontario to issue a statement of regret and to ratify the student group. The refusal was deemed discriminatory against Palestinians and persons associated with Palestinians.

Another tactic is to smear such individuals who have supported the Palestinians with allegations of anti-Semitism. One such individual was Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu. A few complaints from the Jewish community led to the Noble Prize winner being banned from speaking on campus by the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. Tutu was attacked because of statements he made criticizing Israeli policy toward the Palestinians that some Jewish individuals said were “anti Semitic.”

This campaign is also an attack on the numerous dissenting Jews who support human rights for the Palestinians. Canadian Jewish groups like Not in Our Name (NION) and Jewish Independent Voices (Canada) and their support for the Palestinians and their criticism of the “Jewish State,” are simply ignored. For political purposes they simply do not exist.

The ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, as well as the massacres, rapes and illegal confiscation of Palestinian property, is well documented by Israeli historians.

The view that it is anti-Semitic to criticize Israel, or its actions, is pure and simple racism against Palestinians. The Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims have many legitimate reasons to criticize the policies and actions of “the Jewish State.” A state that aggressively, and repeatedly, attacks its neighbours and is slowly but systematically ethnically cleansing its non-Jewish population is not above criticism.

Many Jews are anti-Zionist and opposed the settlement of Jews in Palestine….”

How will they bill the "USAGE" in the Usage Based Billing?

No Usage Based Billing

If the CRTC is actually going to allow Bell Canada to implement usage based billing, the question is: How?

If we are being charged per packet, how is that going to be itemized?

Itemized Internet Bills?

To figure out how much internet individual users are using Bell Canada will need an army of bean counters to keep track of each packet that is being used by each user. Interesting. Then all of this data will need to be sorted out and itemized. This will generate a huge invoice each month. This is also going to dramatically increase Bell Canada’s actual cost of doing business. (We’ll look at “Marginal Costs” in the next blog post… I am still learning about that.)

slashdot.org: iPhone Bill a Whopping 52 Pages Long

PoliTech writes “iPhone bills are surprisingly large – ‘Xbox Large’, according to Ars technica: ‘AT&T’s iPhone bills are quite impressive in their own right. We’re starting to get bills for the iPhone here at Ars, and while many of us have had smartphones for some time, we’ve never seen a bill like this. One of our bills is a whopping 52 pages long, and my own bill is 34 pages long. They’re printed on both sides, too. What gives? The AT&T bill itemizes your data usage whenever you surf the Internet via EDGE, even if you’re signed up for the unlimited data plan. AT&T also goes into an incredible amount of detail to tell you; well, almost nothing. For instance, I know that on July 27 at 3:21 p.m. I had some data use that, under the To/From heading, AT&T has helpfully listed as Data Transfer. The Type of file? Data. My total charge? $0.00. This mind-numbing detail goes on for 52 double-sided pages (for 104 printed pages!) with absolutely no variance except the size of the files.’ You would think that a data company would have a more efficient billing process.”

Bell Canada

I am curious as to how Bell Canada will handle this.

If they do itemize the packets, how will we know they aren’t just making these numbers up?

Measurement Canada

I contacted Measurement Canada on August 21st via their online form to inquire as to how they will monitor Bell Canada’s measurement of individual internet use to safeguard Canadian consumers when Usage Based Billing is introduced.

Because of course they cannot possibly allow Bell Canada to just pull “Usage” numbers out of the air. If they are going to be billing us for what we are using they need to be able to back up their claims of what we are using.

And Bell Canada certainly can NOT be allowed to Bill Canadian Users for the packets that they deliberately discard when they throttle Canadian internet use (see UBB Glossary). I mean really, if Bell Canad is going to deliberately inflate the figures of what bandwidth Canadians are using, they cannot then bill us for this inflation. That would be FRAUD. So Measurement Canada will certainly need to be right on top of things to ensure fairness and honesty.

No wonder Measurement Canada hasn’t responded. I expect that THEY have no idea of how to oversee Usage Based Billing. Or the manpower to even begin to monitor Bell Canada’s auditing of internet usage. Personally I don’t trust Bell Canada to tell me how many packets I’ve used. I expect independant government oversight.

Privacy Laws

Another thing to consider is the question of how Bell Canada is going to bill Internet users who are NOT their customers. Since I have never had a business relationship with Bell Canada’s Internet arm, they don’t have a business relationship with me. So how are they going to know who to bill? They can’t force Teksavvy to hand over secure billing information. We do have Privacy Laws in Canada…. don’t we?

And of course privacy laws should also protect Canadian consumers from having Bell Canada’s telephone branch from giving up customer information to the Bell Canada internet wholesaling division who will want the information on who to bill.

So if Bell can’t get my billing information from Teksavvy, does this mean that Teksavvy will be forced to hire the army of administrators needed to perform the internet useage audit necessitated by introducing UBB? That doesn’t seem fair.

Putting aside the question of where this internet auuseage audit will take place, who will pay for this whole new layer of accountants? The consumer will.

So not only will we be paying extortionate fees for internet access which includes, but is not limited to

  • surfing the web…
  • along with the website ads we will now have the privilege of paying Bell Canada to enjoy
  • email
  • all of the spam that the spammers get to send us for free
  • all the software we download,
  • freeware which developers make available FOR FREE will now earn Bell Canada new profit
  • shareware which developers make available for customers to tryE will now earn Bell Canada new profit
  • commercial software we purchase,
  • inxluding of course all those Windows updates…

BUT we will also be paying the costs of the massive new buraucracy which will be necessitated by the very fact of Usage Based Billing.

That isn’t all…. Canadian tax dollars will now have to pay for Measurement Canada staff to both figure out how to oversee and police this practice of Bell Canada Usage Based Billing.

CRTC

Talk about adding insult to injury.

From everything I have read, there is currently no technology in place to meter internet bandwidth (in the usage sense).

These are all issues and questions which should have been answered before the CRTC even considered Bell Canada’s request for Usage Based Billing.

Certainly before the CRTC approved Bell Canada’s implementation of Usage Based Billing.

Canadian internet users CAN do something about this travesty.

Snow dusts western Labrador

Snow dusts western Labrador

CBC News

August 27, 2009

Labrador is known for its long, cold winters, but even the most die-hard lovers of the place known as The Big Land must be shaking their heads at what some of them faced this morning; snow.

It was only a light dusting over western Labrador, but it was enough to cover the ground, rooftops and vehicles.

Weather officials say the amount that fell overnight had the liquid equivalent of five centimetres.

For 13-year-old Konrad Kuhne of Labrador City, it was enough to head straight to the local golf course, where he skied for five kilometres.

“Just excitement rushing through my head,” he said. “It was awesome, just getting a chance [of] being the only one in Canada to ski in August.”

Kuhne is a member of the provincial cross-country ski team, and ironically he was heading to western Newfoundland Thursday for dry land ski training.

CBC weather specialist Ryan Snoddon said the good news is that the snow won’t last long.

“There is light at the end of the snowy tunnel in that tomorrow it’ll be back up to double digits and Saturday is looking like 13 degrees and sunshine,” he said.

Facebook Friday: Facebook to Tighten Privacy Policy

Live in Canada? Watch the evening news? If the answer to both of these questions is yes, then you have probably heard that Facebook will be upping its security and privacy standards. Facebook has not publicly specified exactly what they will be doing to tighten security, only that it will enable users to be better protected and that our use of apps and quizzes will be affected by the new security measures. Although the new security measures are a result of Canada’s request to comply with our privacy laws, there is no plan of isolating the changes to Facebook’s Canadian users, which represent about a quarter of all Facebook users. Facebook will likely implement these privacy policy changes across the board. This is probably a good thing as other countries have already begun investigating Facebook security and privacy policies.

Facebook has long received scrutiny in regard to their lax privacy policies and blasé attitude towards information sharing. In the social media platform’s defence, users are given autonomy when it comes to choosing which info is made public, and only basic personal information is provided. There is no opportunity on Facebook to release banking, credit, or Social Insurance Numbers (Social Security Numbers in The States), but for the parents of teens and tweens, name, age, email and phone numbers is enough to start alarm bells ringing.

First Steps in Canada

Like many truth commissions, Canada’s Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission has experienced a turbulent start, including internal conflicts among the commissioners.  But, things seem to finally be moving forward.

On Tuesday, the commision’s chair, Justice Murray Sinclair, visited Algoma University, which is situated on the former Shingwauk Indian Residential School.  Beyond meeting with relatives of the residential school’s former students, he was also on site to examine the school’s extensive archives, which should provide a great deal of historical material to inform the commission’s efforts.

The commission has five years and a $60 million budget to complete its work, but also like many truth commissions, its mandate is extensive.  As Carol Martin explains, the commission has been tasked with creating a historical record of both government policies and actions as well as the experiences of the First Nations people sent to these schools.  In addition, it must develop recommendations for the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement and establish a national research center devoted to the residential school experience.

Michael Purvis of the Sault Star emphasized the commission’s hope to tell the full story of what happened in the residential schools.  While that must include some terrible tales of personal trauma, Sinclair explained that “those who have a positive experience as well have an opportunity to express that, and also those who can talk about their involvement in projects relating to the schools, those who played on sports teams for example, those who want to ensure that their personal history is documented with all of its facets” will have a chance to address the commission.
